// It's time to disrupt, reclaim, and re-imagine digital space
From deepfakes and AI therapists to autonomous welfare allocation and surveillance, AI and new digital technologies are taking greater space in our lives ★ yet citizens are rarely given the tools of decision-making power.
Together, we will run a series of assemblies across Europe to understand our current digital infrastructure & governance, and reimagine, showcase & demand a Democratic Digital Commons.

what does it mean to join an assembly?
For over a decade, European Alternatives and its allies have been building the vision of a transnational, participatory, and radically democratic Europe ★ one that doesn't only happen in parliaments or behind closed doors, but in public space, community centres, universities, and more.
An assembly brings together ordinary people, ensuring marginalised voices are brought to the centre, and plays with formats of deliberation through arts. An assembly sows democratic seeds wherever it goes ★ it helps you become active, and brings your demands to changemakers.
We believe it's time to bring assemblies to digital space, where the voices of citizens have so far been excluded. Our data and time has trained and created AI ★ its use should be a collective decision. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

advocacy
The EU has laws.
But laws without citizens are just words.
Our collective time, data, and lives have been used to create digital space ★ and we demand a say on how it's governed.
The European Union has introduced the AI Act, the Digital Markets Act, and the Digital Services Act. But regulation without citizen input is not real democracy.
Algorithmic systems are having real impact in the public sector ★ deciding who gets welfare, who gets flagged at a border, who gets a job interview. Citizens deserve a seat at the table (ó﹏ò。)

!! problem
Discriminatory welfare algorithms discovered in Denmark and Sweden. Biometric mass surveillance legalised in France, Czech Republic, Hungary. o(TヘTo)
!! problem
AI regulation is written by private corporations and lobbyists. Those most affected are systematically excluded. (>_<)

key messages
→ ★
Digital democracy
Democracy shouldn't end at digital borders. DDC calls for more public control over digital space and infrastructure, with citizen-led decision making.
→ ★
Sustainable infrastructure
New technologies must be designed with sustainability at the heart. We support local & collectively owned servers, open data sets, and the end of neocolonial exploitation of resources.
→ ★
Unbiased AI
Algorithmic technology must stop replicating current global power structures & marginalisations. We call for curated data with intersectional feminist principles.
→ ★
Critical digital education
In order to have digital democracy, we must understand how AI & new technologies work. We call for accessible digital literacy education, including free working space and the promotion of critical thinking.
→ ★
Digital ownership
Citizens must be given ownership and better control over their own data and IP. We call for the end of data exploitation, 3rd party cookies, and stolen training materials.
→ ★
Access to public services
Citizens cannot be digitally excluded from public services due to provider bans or technological barriers. We support the right to offline.
