2020: A year of resilience, reinvention and co-creation

2020 has been an intense, unpredicted and often complicated year for all of us. The Covid19 pandemic has forced us to move our lives to an online dimension and to reinvent the work and plans we had for the year.

In 2020 we’ve witnessed many aspects of our political, social and cultural spheres of our lives affected directly by the digitalisation of spaces, exemplified in the way in which new technologies like Zoom or Facetime are changing our ways of communicating and being together in times of quarantine.

For European Alternatives and our members, 2020 has been a time of resilience, reinvention and co-creation with new partners; and at the same time, it has been one of the most promising and fruitful years that we can remember.

In the midst of the first lockdowns and restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, we demonstrated that civil society and citizens are able to come together across borders, to deliberate and to take responsibility for their future and the future of European residents, even during times of extraordinary difficulties. We’ve managed to kick-off new processes in the field of participatory democracy with Citizens Take Over Europe, in the field of EU migration policy with From the Sea to the City, in the world of art and politics with Studio Rizoma, in the struggle of workers’ rights in Europe with Workers Without Borders, and in many more social and political challenges with new initiatives that will be launched next year.

European Alternatives is a machine that runs on dreams: the dreams of all those who want to move from an inactive democracy to an inclusive, radically democratic Europe able to tackle the social crisis of our century.

European Alternatives is a machine that runs on dreams: the dreams of all those who want to move from an inactive democracy to an inclusive, radically democratic Europe able to tackle the social crisis of our century. It is a privilege for us to work and cooperate with thousands of people engaging in dozens of activities and ambitious processes across countries, from feminism and gender rights, to ecological justice, migration issues, media freedom, precarity and labour.

That is why, it is particularly important to us to thank you this year, for your extra energy and your support this year. A year of reinvention for everyone that we hope will continue seeing the results of our efforts in 2021. We’ve put together for you our biannual report of 2019 – 2020 where you can see more in detail the impact of the work we’ve done together.
