Rui Tavares

Rui joined the board of European Alternatives in September 2016. Rui is an historian, former member of the European Parliament ( 2009-2014 mandate), founder of the new Portuguese party LIVRE and currently visiting fellow at the New York University’s Remarque Institute.  In June 2013, he was commissioned by the European Parliament to submit a report on the situation of the rule of law in Hungary. The Tavares report,  adopted by the European Parliament, suggested the creation of a Copenhagen Committee to monitor EU countries permanently on the basis of agreed criteria when it comes to adherence to the rule of law, with a gradual set of enforcement mechanisms to address rights violations.
