{"id":22950,"date":"2023-10-13T13:42:32","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T11:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/euroalter.local\/?p=22950"},"modified":"2023-10-16T09:46:08","modified_gmt":"2023-10-16T07:46:08","slug":"open-letter-to-the-european-commission-stand-by-your-commitment-to-the-european-citizens-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/it\/open-letter-to-the-european-commission-stand-by-your-commitment-to-the-european-citizens-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Open letter to the European Commission: Stand by your commitment to the European Citizens&#8217; Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Dear President von der Leyen,<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dear Members of the College of Commissioners,<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" dir=\"ltr\">We, the undersigned civil society organizations dedicated to the promotion of European democracy and its foundational values, write to you today with an\u00a0<strong>unequivocal and urgent message.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" dir=\"ltr\">In June 2021, the European Commission\u00a0<strong>made a commitment<\/strong>\u00a0in response to the European Citizens&#8217; Initiative (ECI)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.endthecageage.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">End the Cage Age<\/a>. In your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/citizens-initiative.europa.eu\/initiatives\/details\/2018\/000004\/end-cage-age_en#:~:text=Answer%20of%20the%20European%20Commission,-Main%20conclusions%20of&amp;text=In%20its%20response%20to%20the,animals%20mentioned%20in%20the%20Initiative.\">written response<\/a>, the Commission pledged to present a legislative proposal to phase out and ultimately prohibit the use of cages for animals, aligning with the ECI&#8217;s objectives. This commitment, with a deadline set by the end of 2023, marked a significant stride in addressing the concerns of 1.4 million European citizens who rallied behind this critical cause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" dir=\"ltr\">End the Cage Age is more than an animal welfare issue; it stands as a\u00a0<strong>litmus test for the credibility of the ECI<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>itself<\/strong>, the very bedrock of European participatory democracy. Failing to fulfill your own written commitment\u00a0<strong>jeopardizes the trust citizens place in the EU&#8217;s democratic processes and institutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" dir=\"ltr\">As the Commission\u2019s 2024 Work Program is now under negotiation, we implore you to honor your commitment to European democracy and not erode the\u00a0<strong>ECI\u2019s potential to resonate with and mobilize citizens on critical issues.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\" dir=\"ltr\">We also extend an open invitation to engage in a substantive discussion on this matter. The Commission must stand by its word and, in doing so,\u00a0<strong>protect European democracy\u00a0<\/strong>by demonstrating responsiveness to its citizens&#8217; voices.
