This is the first post starting to analyse the findings from this research, starting with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>how important young people value finding a place they can call their own, learning, making and earning a living<\/strong><\/span>. For three quarters of these, that means <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">having a place they can call their own<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 to provide them with stability, particularly with people who are tired of moving from town to town and even from country to country \u2013 and in some cases, to help their parents settle too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s split down the middle in terms of proportions of people wanting their own house versus those who want their own flat. For about a sixth of people, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>living in a good neighbourhood<\/strong><\/span> is very important, particularly one that is clean and safe. A couple of people preferred to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>live in a place with others <\/strong><\/span>&#8211; such as through a commune &#8211; or prioritise<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> living abroad<\/strong><\/span>, such as in South America and Asia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ibm.co\/12OauS3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/images\/article_uploads\/Living TreeMap.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClick on the visualisation to activate it<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Learning <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: justify; width: 200px; height: 115px; margin: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/images\/article_uploads\/Learning Wordle.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many people want to do additional courses, particularly post graduate qualifications in disciplines they\u2019ve developed an interest in and want to research further (such as horticulture, art or design) or that they need for their work (like law or economics).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most importantly, people want to learn practical skills so they can become independent of the system \u2013 whether that\u2019s cooking, using new technologies or other forms of DIY. In particular, many people want to learn to be fluent in another language, because they\u2019re migrants in another country will move abroad and need it to get a job and integrate into their new society.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ibm.co\/18bVlC1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 500px; height: 221px; margin: 5px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/images\/article_uploads\/Learning.png\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClick on the visualisation to activate it<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Making<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 201px; height: 115px; margin: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/images\/article_uploads\/Making.jpg\" \/>Just under a fifth of participants felt making was an important ambition. Almost a third of these want to <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">do work that they enjoy and that they are good at<\/span><\/strong>. This was defined as meaningful work that fulfils young people professionally. For some that was about working in a cooperative environment or producing their own food. For others it was about being the best specialist in their field \u2013 such as becoming a teacher working with children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Building on this, around one in ten respondents wanted to aspire to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>get as many people as possible to see what they had made<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 whether that was getting their films or books distributed widely, performing in important films or being a famous artist in their genre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another third of people want to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>start their own business<\/strong><\/span>, in particularly being able to earn a living from it to make it sustainable While only five percent want to do <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>work which challenged them<\/strong><\/span>, around 15 percent <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>strive to have a stable job<\/strong><\/span>, particularly those currently working in precarious situations, such as at night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Stability is therefore very important, but that doesn\u2019t mean to say they don&#8217;t want to see change<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 the same percentage want to achieve <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>progress in their career<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 whether through being better paid or promoted whether in their current field &#8211; such as becoming a professor or a manager \u2013 or finally being able to use their qualifications to move into the sector they wanted to work in \u2013 such as European politics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ibm.co\/17e4WU8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 500px; height: 221px; margin: 5px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/images\/article_uploads\/Making TreeMap.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Click on the visualisation to activate it<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Earning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 201px; height: 117px; margin: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/images\/article_uploads\/Earning.jpg\" \/>Only 8% of people value earning money as an important principle to strive for. Almost a third want to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>become financially independent<\/strong><\/span>, in particular from their family or to be able to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>turn their hobby into a job<\/strong><\/span>, or to sustain their creative ventures, such as filmmaking or jewellery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Almost a third prioritise <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>getting paid fairly<\/strong><\/span> as an important expectation, to stop doing slave work for companies and actually become rewarded for their efforts at work \u2013 such as getting paid for having their books published. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Is financial independence becoming more important than financial stability?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ibm.co\/12ptAS7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/images\/article_uploads\/Earning TreeMap.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClick on the visualisation to activate it<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our next post in this series will explore the other expectations young people have.
