If we can pretend to create social value that can have a systemic effect, then we also need to\u00a0<strong>move beyond just understanding the causes of an issue<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 whether it be homelessness, elderly care or loneliness \u2013 to be able to\u00a0<strong>make sense of the system\/s the issue is part of.\u00a0<\/strong>To tackle the issues caused by the system requires us to move from social innovation to systemic innovation<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5884\" alt=\"6 STEPS SI (without text)\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/6-STEPS-SI-without-text.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"476\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If we use the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1f2WW0l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Six Steps to Significant Change<\/a>\u00a0model by @forumforthefuture, we can social innovation often focuses on tackling needs and creating pioneering practices to meet these. With support, it can even be sustained and scaled.<\/p>\n<p>But when we discover or even experience a problem or a need,\u00a0<strong>we don\u2019t instinctively think to diagnose the overall system in which that problem resides<\/strong>. In @forumforthefuture\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1cqPF2o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#bigshift\u00a0<\/a>report, @SDStephDraper provides a checklist to kickstart how we might do this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5883\" alt=\"Systemic Innovation\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Systemic-Innovation.jpg\" width=\"927\" height=\"555\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we organised Visual Camp, we brought together designers, policy makers and practitioners to be able to paint a picture of systemic issues, from economic growth to personal data. These helped engage different perspectives to understand systemic issues and identify connections between the different parts of them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5868\" alt=\"5727168488_de59c5d1f3\" src=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/5727168488_de59c5d1f3.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"370\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With Making a Living, we reframed the issue from youth unemployment to \u201chow do young people cope with making a living\u201d so that the research could make sense of the complexity of the different variables which young people have to navigate \u2013 not just whether they have a job or not, but how their expectations and attitudes to work interact with their ability to cope psychologically and practically with making a living.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"visually_embed\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"visually_embed_infographic\" alt=\"How to make a living in 2020\" src=\"http:\/\/thumbnails.visually.netdna-cdn.com\/how-to-make-a-living-in-2020_5236f4020d6d7_w587.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"visually_embed_cycle\">Explore more <a href=\"http:\/\/visual.ly\">infographics<\/a> like this one on the web&#8217;s largest information design community &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/visual.ly\">Visually<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>As @annabirney describes in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1hlfARk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discussion series<\/a>\u00a0on this subject,\u00a0<strong>\u201csystemic innovation means completely redesigning the way a system works (for example, the health service), and achieving innovation across every part of it\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/19R6G9t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0tips<\/a>\u00a0from @nesta_uk on how to achieve systems innovation is that\u00a0<strong>\u201chaving a great product is no guarantee of success, unless you can assemble around it the complementary services<\/strong>, software, support, infrastructure and channels that allow consumers to use it easily and effectively\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The best example they give of this is the \u201celectric car\u201d which is cheaper to run than traditional cars and better for the environment, but when you factor in the cost to buy and maintain, the lack of infrastructure &amp; business model for the installation &amp; purchasing of the batteries needed to power them, its value proposition suddenly fades away.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than developing solutions to unmet needs,\u00a0<strong>should we also be looking at what are the components that are missing in a system (like in the labour or housing market) that we could develop\u2026and how we can better connect up the missing links?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be discussing this and more at #outcomefest.\u00a0\u00a0If you haven&#8217;t signed up to the event,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1d2iTuZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">do so now<\/a>.
