How do we experience a space like a market? The market is part of our everyday reality, but how often do we reflect on what we think, feel, do, say, see, hear, eat, drink or buy here? What does this space really mean to us?<\/p>\n

Working with local groups and market traders, we quickly realised that we should make it playful to make it social and encourage movement around the market. So we came up with the concept of a treasure hunt.<\/p>\n

The treasure hunt uses a mission-based approach where people could pick and mix different activities from the prize-based \u201cspot the smile\u201d to \u201cpick me up\u201d tasks to the more ethnographic forms of participation from \u201cI wish this was\u201d to \u201cthe future I choose\u201d – more on those later.<\/p>\n

We wanted a way to\u00a0encourage<\/a>\u00a0for people to record their experiences, stories and emotions about the treasure hunt to connect up to our vision of visualising transnationalism. So we invited our good friends\u00a0Mindful Maps<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Auralab<\/a>\u00a0to facilitate an experiment which you can see much more of\u00a0here<\/a>. Emily & Laura used tags to colour code emotions helping engage the public even more.<\/p>\n

Joining up the dots, in\u00a0Cluj<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Prague<\/a>, workshops looked at how we perceive the role of\u00a0emotion and motion in public space<\/a>. Barcelona, Berlin and London city groups visualised the student protests to\u00a0rethink the university<\/a>\u00a0as part of the \u201ccommons\u201d, foreshadowing the use of public spaces by the current \u201cindignados\u201d and ideas on how to\u00a0reinvent the university<\/a>\u00a0like @univproject.<\/p>\n

We also invited people to\u00a0visualise transnational fluxes<\/a>\u00a0through the lens of gender in\u00a0Bologna<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Cluj<\/a>, of multisexuality in Lublin and of\u00a0new media<\/a>\u00a0in Amsterdam. In Cardiff and Sofia, we focused on storytelling as network, creating a\u00a0collective story<\/a>\u00a0using text messaging in the former and exploring the narratives which the city weaved into its fabric through a\u00a0poetic treasure hunt<\/a>\u00a0for the latter.<\/p>\n

We feel what we see<\/strong>\u00a0From the social market to emotional mapping via the treasure hunt, we didn\u2019t just want people to immerse themselves in creative activity, but involve designers and visual illustrators too to make sense of the feelings the participants were experiencing through our festival.<\/p>\n
