What Europe Does Ukraine need? Putting the question about Europe this way obviously reminds us of Freud\u2019s famous question that has never been answered: \u201cWhat does a woman want?\u201d Having \u201cneed\u201d instead of \u201cwant\u201d inverts the perspective \u2212 the Europe that Ukraine wants apparently differs from the Europe Ukraine really needs. Moreover, the Europe needed by Ukraine is also the one needed by Europe itself, even if its current embodiment in the form of the EU does not long for it.<\/p>\n
First of all,<\/strong><\/span> the Europe that we all need today is a Europe of Enlightenment. This refers to the centrality of freedom and democracy, most of all the freedom to use one\u2019s intelligence \u2212 \u201cDare to know!\u201d, as Kant stated it succinctly. Challenging the traditional authorities, this principle results in secularization, so much required in times of religious fundamentalisms, and has led to the Declaration of Human Rights, the Declaration of Independence in the USA, and to the end of slavery and aristocracy.<\/p>\n Secondly,<\/span> <\/strong>the Europe we need today is a Europe of modernity. This is a readiness to create utopias for social change, to search for political alternatives, the priority of equality, and anti-conservatism. Modernity also means an aesthetic revolution \u2212 the emancipation of art and its ability to capture our experience in its wholeness. Modernity, as we know from Habermas, is an unfinished project \u2212 like Europe itself, both need fulfillment and accomplishment.<\/p>\n Thirdly,<\/strong> <\/span>the Europe we need is a Europe of the Spring of the Peoples \u2212 the most widespread revolutionary wave in European history, changing political leadership, increasing people’s\u2019 participation in governments, bringing freedom of press and the end of serfdom in Eastern Europe. Today, Europe is experiencing a new spring of the people \u2212 immigrants, refugees, and escapers from the warfare in Europe\u2019s south and east are coming from different sides and changing Europe onwards.<\/p>\n To accomplish the European project nowadays means to fulfill its most urgent need, which is establishing European citizenship. Overcoming the limits of nation-states in Europe means creating the first international democracy \u2212 the European International based on the common European citizenship.<\/p>\n Europe needs a Re-Union. The current model of the EU has to be renewed and expanded to deal with new global political challenges and to apply its principles and rules on the whole European continent.<\/p>\n The constitution of European citizenship would be the best European revolution one could ever imagine.<\/p>\n Res publica est res populi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Europe needs a Re-Union.
