This is the number of <strong>closed camps detaining migrants<\/strong> that appear on the <a href=\"http:\/\/closethecamps.org\/\">Closethecamps.org<\/a> website launched today. These camps have all been in use between 2011 and 2013, and are located in the European Union\u2019s (EU) countries, in accessing countries which have applied for membership to the EU, in those that qualify for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enpi-info.eu\/main.php?id=344&amp;id_type=2\">European Neighbourhood Policy<\/a> (ENP) and in some of those which participate in the European migration policies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These figures only reflect detention in close camps[<a href=\"#\">1<\/a>] &#8211; i.e. sites where migrants are totally deprived of liberty. These places are emblematic of the numerous <strong>human rights violations<\/strong> migrants are facing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For over a decade, Migreurop has systematised data collection and has documented that phenomenon. The network is especially using maps to cast light to this complex and diverse reality, to raise awareness of these questions and reach the widest audience possible. The \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.closethecamps.org\/2013\/11\/23\/migreurops-encampment-map\/\">Encampment Map<\/a>\u201d, the updated fifth version of which was published in 2012, is a useful tool to illustrate the development, both in nature and in numbers, of detention sites for migrants.<br \/>\nBeyond the collection and dissemination of information, Migreurop aims to mobilise all those who oppose mechanisms that result in the detention and the removal of migrants, to defend their <strong>fundamental rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openaccessnow.eu\/\">Open Access Now<\/a> campaign, launched in 2011 in partnership with European Alternatives, calls for unconditional access for civil society members and for journalists to immigration detention centres, has helped emphasise and recall that opacity keeps surrounding these detention sites: obstacles faced by NGOs, researchers, families and friends of migrants, citizens to access information, difficulty to contact detainees, obstruction to supportive actions and to some awareness and advocacy campaigns on these matters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The collaborative project \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiatlas.net\/en\/2013\/09\/12\/dynamic-map-of-foreign-citizens-detained-at-state-borders-olivier-clochard-migreurop-2013\/\">Dynamic mapping of the detention of migrants<\/a>\u201d aims to facilitate the access to information on immigration detention and its consequences on the life and the <strong>rights of migrants<\/strong>. This ambitious initiative was presented publicly on 6 December 2013 in the framework of the international meeting entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/euroalter.com\/2013\/international-forum-migrant-detention-in-europe-and-beyond-what-perspectives\/\">Detention of migrants in Europe and beyond: what perspective?<\/a>\u201d held in Paris by Migreurop, European Alternatives and the Observatory on the Detention of Migrants (Observatoire de l\u2019Enfermement des Etrangers \u2013 OEE, France).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, the network is launching this website, in the broader context of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiatlas.net\/en\/\">AntiAtlas of borders project<\/a>, which is organising an exhibition at the Compagnie, Marseille (France), between 13 December 2013 and 1 March 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For more information on the collaborative project \u201c<strong>Dynamic mapping of the detention of migrants<\/strong>\u201d, please email the project team with any queries or feedback (English \/French\/Italian) you have: <a href=\"mailto:http:\/\/www.migreurop.org\/article2259.html?lang=en?subject=INFO%20on%20the%20collaborative%20project%20%E2%80%9CDynamic%20mapping%20of%20the%20detention%20of%20migrants%E2%80%9D\">contact@migreurop.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[<strong>1<\/strong>]\u00a0The <strong>detention of migrants<\/strong> can also occur in \u00abopen\u00bb sites that follow the same logic geared towards administrative and social control (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.migreurop.org\/article2259.html?lang=en\">Migreurop brief on the detention of migrants<\/a>). Although the network has always brought forward a large typology of the notion of \u201ccamps\u201d, only closed camps have been taken into account so far in Migreurop\u2019s database on which most of the maps available on the website are based.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>393.
