The first European Commons Assembly, launched in\u00a0<strong>November 2016 with approximately 150 commoners<\/strong>\u00a0at various spaces around Brussels and the European Parliament, can be understood as the evidence of the aspirations and discourse of the commons becoming a renewed political force.\u00a0The on-going nature of the ECA, aims to lay the\u00a0<strong>foundations for a united and strong European commons movement<\/strong>\u00a0based on a twofold goal: 1) support the decentralised activities of commoners and their engagement in concrete, collaborative and bottom-up actions and 2) give a voice to the commons and campaign at the European level, including in the institutions, to build a flourishing European political civil-society movement for the commons.<\/p>\n<p>The ECA continue exploring how we can bring the advent of creative institutions and political alternatives from the local to the European level, and\u00a0articulate joint demands for urgent political issues, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Empowering community\u00a0<strong>renewable energy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Internet<\/strong>\u00a0infrastructures as a commons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Territories of commons as reservoirs of\u00a0<strong>sustainable food production<\/strong>, biodiversity, \u00a0cultural heritage, climate change resilience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open research and science<\/strong>\u00a0with citizen participation for social and environmental objectives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Copyright reform<\/strong>\u00a0for access to knowledge and information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Transparency<\/strong>\u00a0and direct<strong>\u00a0citizen participation<\/strong>\u00a0in political institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting and financing\u00a0<strong>urban commons<\/strong>\u00a0for culture, co-housing, transport, food production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Sustainable and democratic management of\u00a0<strong>natural resources and biodiversity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the European institutions are losing efficiency and credibility in tackling most urgent issues of our times, the commons movements are claiming to go beyond borders and serve as the ground to start implementing new policies to address the \u201cdemocratic deficit\u201d.\u00a0Throughout Europe, European citizens are increasingly aware of the need for a different model of globalisation.
